Cargo Management handbook

The Challenge:

To create a visual handbook to be used by crew members for communication in the event that their vessel is seized by pirates.

The Diagnosis:

The handbook needed to very simply educate on the dynamics of a ship, demonstrating the dangerous outcomes that can arise when equipment is damaged or crew are prevented from carrying out preventative maintenance. Universal visual imagery would be a necessity, given the language barriers and highly stressful situation under which the handbook would be used.

The Creative Solution:

The handbook clearly and simply demonstrates the do’s and don’ts of managing the vessel. Visual Imagery was used to show how operations should be allowed to continue and the potential dangerous outcomes that could arise if damage is caused to either the ships equipment or crew. The handbook was hardwearing, waterproof, adaptableĀ and followed an easy navigation system.

The results:

The handbook was originally designed for use onboard of Shell vessels. However, the handbook has recently beenĀ adopted by OCIMF (Oil Companies International Marine Forum) and has become a global resource recommended to be used on all ships sailing in areas where piracy exists.
